Out Of Africa

During a recent Bed, Bath and Beyond visit, I discovered a new product. It is called Out Of Africa. They sell three different types of shea butter. Too bad I just bought coconut oil.

It's all natural folks.

Ingredients:
Unrefined shea butter, essential oils

Since I am into the whole oil instead of lotion for body moisturizing, I want to try the shea butter oil as well.

I give up...kinda

So this past weekend at my hair appointment, my stylist suggested that I try the Pantene Relaxed and Natural Breakage Defense Mask Deep Conditioner. I gave her the side eye of course. But when I saw this post by Curly Nikki and another on The Fashion Bomb about the product my inner PJ rang out.

Tuesday, I went to Walmart looking for it. No luck. Although I did walk out with some coconut oil (which I have been wanting for a while) so it wasn't a total waste. I then ventured on to Walgreens. They didn't have it either. I mean, isn't this stuff supposed to be easy to find? Isn't it like the only product that they stock for blacks at stores. When I wasn't looking for it, it was everywhere.

So yesterday, I figured I would try Bed, Bath and Beyond. I discovered their extensive beauty section on a Giovanni product hunt one day. They had the shampoo and the conditioner, but not the mask.

Looks like I'll have to order it. And thats a bummer because I wanted to try it this weekend. Where else should I check?

Dry Rod Set

It's been 5 days since I curlformed. And lets just say the curly fro was getting a little to fro for me. So my original thoughts were to dry braid tonight and keep it moving. But while at work I realized I had misplaced (not so much) my satin pillow case. On top of the fact that I had a 15% off Sally coupon burning a whole in my purse, all signs pointed to a beauty store run. Of course I never walk out with just one item. I did almost run out of curlformers last week, so hey I'll take a pack of those. Then I saw the Flexi Rods. My girl Tracy has been having wonderful results from her rod sets, and I secretly wanted to try them anyway. So....you know I bought some.

It was then kid on Christmas day ish. I had to use them tonight. So I separated my hair, added about 5 sprays of Giovanni Leave In, a pump of mousse, and then roded. I used one pack of rods, resulting in 10 sections.

We'll see what the morning brings.

Dear FbN: Product Testimonial

So after hearing about the great results that Miss G had with the Giovanni Mousse,  a loyal reader, Tracy, wanted to also share her good experience that she had while experimenting with some new products.

Testimonial!  So I just took my rods out and my hair is softer than ever!  I tried to post this but this is what I did:
Put on dry hair Aubrey Honeysuckle Rose Co then added EVOO on top of that, put on cap and sat under dryer for 20 min.  Rinsed and cowashed twice with Giovanni Smooth as Silk. The put in some HEHH to comb it through.  Put in Giovanni Leave-In and Giovanni Mousse Foam and set on rods...two hours later under dryer my hair is softer than ever before.
Wha'ts different? The DC with Aubrey and EVOO and the HEHH at the end.  The rest was "normal" and I never achieved such soft results before.
If you want to share of your product reviews or hair-perimentations, please send to us.  We'd love to hear about your experience.

Stay Fierce!

I think I'm in love

Yall know I was looking for a setting lotion. Well I think I found it. My hair loves this product. I did a dry braid out to salvage last weeks horrible curlformer experience. I sprayed each section with my leave in/glycerin/water mix. Then added one pump of the mousse before braiding and rodding the ends. It was probably one of my best braidouts. My hair had dumb definition and crazy shine.  I will definitely try this product with future curlformer attempts. I guess I hyped it up cause Toots even got some. Haven't heard yea or nay from her as of yet. She has been slack on so many levels. Yeah I said it.

Silky Milk

Kim over at naturally_psyched has managed to stretch her twist out for 7 days. Yeah I know, pretty impressive. She swears that a product Silky Milk by Straight Request made it all possible. I just so happen to in the market for a good setting lotion. So I tried to research the product. It is pretty hard to find. Not much comes up on google about it. I have to give it the side eye at a glance because it is marketed with black hair care products. I love to support my people, but most of the products targeted for blacks have ALL of the ingredients that naturals have been told to stay away from. I can not find an ingredient list for this product anywhere. Has anyone heard yea or nay about product?

Maybe Kim will grace us with some answers.

Dear FbN: What's your regimen?

A transitioning curly was interested in the regimens of the FbN contributors. Here goes:

Sunday afternoon:
Monday morning:
  • oil scalp with Jojoba Oil
  • moisturize each plait with Oyin burnt sugar pomade
  • unravel and fluff each plait
Wednesday night:
  • grab a small section of hair and plait
  • continue until whole head is plaited randomly
  • spray a plait with Infusium 23/glycerine/water mix and sometimes DevaCurl set it free, or HE totally twisted mousse.
  • curl the end of the plait with a rod
  • continue until all plaits are damp and have rods on the ends
Thursday morning:

  • oil scalp with Jojoba oil
  • moisturize each plait with Oyin burnt sugar pomade
  • unravel and fluff each plait
I may be purchasing a set of curlformers this weekend. If so, I will replace the Sunday braid out with a set of curls.

Readers, we are also interested in your regimen. Please share.

Dear FbN: Can rinse out conditioners be used as a leave in?

FbN,

Can you explain how you use HE HH as a leave-in? I am finding it hard to wrap my mind around using a "normal" co as a leave-in, but I been reading CN and it seems to be a normal thing to do. But how much? You do it with your hair wet or dry?

FbN found sources that state information supporting the fact that rinse out conditioners can in fact be used as a leave in on wet hair.

The beauty brains:

Rinse out conditioners are typically made with heavier ingredients (and they generally conditioner better) because they contain a combination of “fatty” chemicals and high molecular weight silicones.

You don’t usually find these ingredients in leave in conditioners because they weigh the hair down too much.

Now, if you have hair that’s really thirsty for conditioning, all bets are off. And while most leave ins don’t make very good rinse out products (because they’re not designed to stay on the hair after rinsing), many rinse outs could work well as a leave in.

Rinse out and Leave in products are formulated to have different functionality, but they can overlap.

Over at the Naturally Curly Forums a member recalls her experience:

since most of CGs need that moisture, many of us use our regular rinse out conditioners as leave in. How much you need depends on your individual hair needs, but I can't remember the last time I used an actual "leave in" conditioner. I just use a smaller amount of my regular conditioner to leave in, and it works much better for me.

What do the readers of FbN think? What were your results when using a rinse out conditioner as a leave in?
